“There is a price to be paid for every increase in consciousness. We cannot be more sensitive to pleasure without being more sensitive to pain.”
Substance and ideology-free, the Psychonaut’s Handbook is potent preparation for the psychedelic experience.
Utilizing techniques of shamanism and psychosomatics, the three guided experiences focus on retrieving allies: power animals, one’s intuition, and even one’s illnesses.
Astronauts and psychonauts have in common that they engage in expanding the furthest reaches of the human experience. However, when it comes to pre-trip preparation, they tend to be polar opposites.
Shamanic Power Animal Journey
A shamanic journey is a 20 minute guided meditation to the beat of a buffalo drum.
Native cultures all over the world recognize the existence of spirit helpers that appear to us in animal form. Once retrieved, they often become valuable allies, helping us deal with physical pain and emotional challenges while assisting us in finding our highest purpose.
Shamanic journeys are 100% substance and ideology free, suitable for people of all ages and backgrounds.
Illness is a Resource
During our time on earth, each of us encounters a unique combination of challenges, hardships, illnesses, and suffering. The truth is that this unpleasantness does not exist simply to make us suffer.
Our pain is here to become our power. Anything that doesn’t kill me makes me stronger - no matter how unpleasant an experience, if I survive it then it is a lesson. The lesson is the medicine.
This process is very useful for integrating unpleasant psychedelic experiences.
Intuition is an Ally
Waste not, want not. If we do in fact have an intuition, then it is very useful to have a method to be able to ask it a question or two, here and there.
We are conditioned to believe that ailments of the body, mind, and heart are separate. It is common to seek therapy for your mind, medical care for your body, and a friend for supporting your heart.
In actuality the mind, body, and heart are all parts of the whole, and they reflect and influence each other. Acquiring a new or different perspective on an issue can be of immense value. Thankfully, psychedelics grant us that possibility.
"The highest truths are the simplest. Like gravity: around here, things go down."
ABOUT ERIC LOVI, M.SC.
I’m a natural processes guy. Ever since I was a kid, whenever I’m in nature I’m always wondering how the forms I observe came to be the way they are. That led me to getting an M.Sc. in Geomorphology - the study of the processes that shape the landscape. While rivers do most of the shaping in our absence, we humans are arguably leaving our mark on every single piece of landscape this planet has. In truth, we are the only environmental problem we have:
"I used to think the top global environmental problems were biodiversity loss, ecosystem collapse and climate change. I thought that with 30 years of good science we could address these problems. But I was wrong. The top environmental problems are selfishness, greed and apathy, and to deal with these we need a spiritual and cultural transformation, and we scientists don't know how to do that."
- James Gustave Speth
I say that even with regards to the realms of the human psyche, we're still just looking at natural processes (that shape the landscape.) If science is our best attempt at the objective observation of the natural world, then we ought to be turning that lens on the pressing cultural and spiritual challenges at hand.
